A few people did chip-in but not nearly enough to make it worth holding back the content for too long. The feature also has a monthly cost, and without enough contributors it wasn't even covering itself. So turning off the paywall actually saves money. I held off for as long as I felt it was worthwhile, but it was time to stop paying for a feature that was costing more than it was making.
